The Trinity

There are some religions in the world today that worship numerous gods. However the Jewish / Christians religions have as their basis the revelation that there is only one true God. Deuteronomy 6v4 says “hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” whilst Isaiah 44v6 declares “I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God”.

This God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is the creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them (Gen 1). He is all powerful (Matt 19v26), all knowing (1 John 3v20), eternal (Pslm 90v2) and His presence is everywhere (Pslm 139v7).

Although the Bible makes it clear that there is only One God, the scriptures show us that this God has revealed Himself in three persons. As Christians we believe wholeheartedly that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit make up the God head, or the trinity.

The Bible shows us that Jesus is God. He contains all of the divine attributes of God. He was there in creation “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1v3); He is ever present “surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt 28v20); He is all knowing “Lord, you know all things” (John 21v17); He is all powerful “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matt 18v20) and He is eternal “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever” (Heb 13v8)

There are many other scriptures we could use that point to the deity of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is God too. Gen 1 shows us the Holy Spirit at work during creation (Gen 1v2). Hebrews 9v14 tells us that the Holy Spirit is eternal. Psalm 139v7 shows us He is always present. Luke 1v35-37 shows us that He is all powerful. 2 Corinthians 2v10 says “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God”, showing us that He is all knowing.

Although the term “trinity” does not appear in the Bible, the scriptures show us that there are three different persons in the God head all with different roles to fulfill. In Genesis 1 God said “let us make man in our image”, showing a plurality in the God head. Paul ends 2 Corinthians by saying “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

One of the best pictures of the trinity at work is in Matt 3 where it shows us God the Son, Jesus, being baptized; The Holy Spirit coming upon Him as a dove and the Father speaking saying “This is my Son” (v16-17)
