“Behold, thou art fair my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves eyes” (Song of Songs 1v15)
Here in the beautiful love song of Solomon, the lover, speaking to the beloved, speaks of her eyes as being “doves eyes”. I wonder if Our King, Jesus, could say that we, His bride have doves eyes?
The interesting thing about the dove is that it has singular vision. In other words it is only able to focus on one thing at a time. In other words, Solomon says about his beloved “she only has eyes for me!”. I wonder if in our lives we only have eyes for Jesus!
In his wonderful vision in Isaiah chapter 6, the prophet sees many things: a throne, cherubim, a robe, an altar, a coal, the smoke of God’s presence. All these things are wonderful. But notice how he begins his description “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord”. To Isaiah, everything else was surpassed by the fact that he saw the Lord! Once you have seen the Lord nothing else can compare. Jesus is so wonderful, so beautiful and so awesome. To have doves eyes means to be captured and captivated by Him alone. To have Him truely win your heart.
When Mary poured the oil upon Jesus’ feet in John 12, she too had doves eyes. She wasn’t put off or hindered by the critics and cynics, she was focused only on loving Jesus. This is true worship. I wonder how many times in life and even in church services we can be distracted by our feelings, circumstances or the opinions of others. To have doves eyes is to get lost in Jesus, in loving and adoring Him.
To have doves eyes is to be totally in love with Jesus. On one occasion some people came to Jesus’ disciples and said “we would see Jesus” This is the cry of every true believer. Those with doves eyes ache for a fresh revelation of Jesus, to encounter Him and to see His glory and presence. They are head over heals in love with the One who loved them more than life itself.
Finally, the dove in scripture is also a picture of the Holy Spirit. To have doves eyes can also mean to see with the vision of the Holy Spirit. What does the Holy Spirit want us to see this day? Our trials and tribulations? No! The Holy Spirit wants us to see Jesus! He wants to open our eyes to see that “those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (1 Kings 6v16). He wants us to see the horses and chariots of fire, speaking of all the power and resources of heaven that are at our disposal! He wants us to see this day, that Jesus is the Lord who is “high and lifted up” (Isaiah 6v1) that He reigns, that He is on the throne, invincible and unquerable! What a mighty God!
Father, give us doves eyes, that our hearts would be captivated by You and You alone. Amen.
