“Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me”. Some of the most famous song lyrics ever written, and years later, still sung in churches all over the world. A few years ago a book was written with the title “What’s So Amazing About Grace?”. Good question! If only we could get a revelation of just how amazing God’s grace really is.
Grace – the undeserved favour of God! It says on one occasion that David went in and sat before God and said “Who am I, that you have brought me this far?”. David is so moved, so in awe of the wonder of all that God has done, that he can’t comprehend Gods’ favour. It was too good to be true! But it was! This is our God! This is the gospel! For a Christian who truely has experienced and encountered the grace of God, we too, are sometimes so moved with wonder that all we can do is just sit in the presence of God and ask the question “Who am I? Who am I that you would lavish your favour on me?”
After God had brought judgement on the earth in Genesis, by destroying it with a flood, he made a covenant with Noah. This covenant was a covenant of grace. The sign of that covenant was a rainbow in the sky. Thousands of years later, the rainbow is still a sign of God’s amazing covenant of grace. It is interesting that when the apostle John sees the throne of God in heaven he describes “a rainbow, resembling the emerald, encircling the throne” (Rev 4v3). God could have encircled His throne with a legion of warrior angels or a sword of flaming fire, but instead he encircles His throne with the symbol of His grace! That is because His throne is a throne of grace (Heb 4v16). I believe if that rainbow were not there, anyone who approached the throne would drop down dead because of the majesty and glory that emit from Him seated on it. However, the rainbow reminds us, that we can approch the very throne of Almighty God. The sign of our covenant, is not a rainbow, but the precious blood of Jesus. Like the rainbow however, the blood of Jesus is a symbol of God’s grace, and by that blood we can boldly enter the presence of God. Thank God for Jesus, who has made a way for us to access the throne room of heaven!
The wonder of God’s grace! Thanks to Jesus, God’s grace is available to all who recieve Him as their Saviour. We are living in the days when the free favours of God profously abound! (Luke 4, Amplifield). Jesus said that we can for ANYTHING in His name and He will do it! (John 14). Amazing grace!
The apostle Paul knew more than most about the amazing grace of God. He makes this amazing statement in Ephesians 1 “He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.” Wow! In Gods’ sight, we are holy and blameless! He doesn’t see our faults and failures, but He sees us as holy and blameless thanks to the wonderful cleansing work of Jesus’s blood! How amazing is Gods grace.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. In love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One he loves. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.”
He has lavished His grace on us! Oh the wonder of the gospel! Why not take a moment today to sit in the presence of God and like David of old say “Who am I Lord, that you do all this for me?”
