As Christians we believe whole heartedly that God created the heavens and the earth (Gen 1v1). John 1 says “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made”. We do not believe in evolution or the “big bang” theory but we believe that everything was created by God and at His command.
We believe that God created man in His own image and breathed into Him the breath of life “So God created man in his own image” (Gen 1v27); “the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Gen 2v7).
Some people may look at the world today and ask “If there is a loving God, why are there such things as sickness, death and suffering?”
The Bible clearly shows us that none of these things existed when God created the world. When God created the world, including people He observed that “it was very good” (Gen 1v31). There was no sickness, death, pain etc in the Garden of Eden and it was God’s intention for it to stay that way.
All of the negative things in the world today are as a result of the fall of man. When God created man He gave them a command “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die” (Gen 2v16-17). God gave man a free will so He could choose whether or not to obey God. Unfortunately man kind disobeyed God, and because God is both holy and just He could not ignore man’s sinfulness.
The results of the fall meant that sin came into the world and all of Adams’ descendents would be born into sin (Rom 5v12-14). It meant that sickness, disease and death entered the world (Gen 2v17). It also meant that mankind would no longer be able to have fellowship with God. Indeed Adam and Eve’s first action after the fall was to hide themselves from God (Gen 3v8)
The fall did not just effect mankind but also creation itself. Because of Adams sin creation itself was cursed (Gen 3v17 and Rom 8v22). This explains why there are natural disasters such as earthquakes, famines and floods.
Praise God for Jesus, who saved us from the curse by His death on the cross! “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree” (Gal 3v13)
